Jose Manuel Barroso, President of European Commission, re-confirmed EU/US ties in his speech at Princeton University saying “two thirds of Americans say that the United States and the European Union share enough values and have enough common interests…indeed, the United States, a united Europe, is really an indispensable partnership.”
Commission’s President, confirmed the anxiety of US academia about EU’s economic power stressing that today most of the bookshelves of European and American bookstores are filled with volumes arguing that “Europe is in decline, eclipsed by the emerging economies to whom – it is argued – belongs the future.”
However, the answer to the European crisis according to Barroso, is the deepening of European integration with the very notion of the process resting on the concept of willing subordination of power to the European law, as no member-state “has been forced to join or stay against the collective will of its citizen.” “It is a Union built on the principles of equality between Member States, the rule of law, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation. A Union underpinned by a culture of compromise.” Commissioner said.
Barroso, praised EU/US markets as the most integrated economies in the world, remaining at the heart of the world economy and retaining a high grade bilateral trade relationship. “Total US investments in the European Union is three times higher than in all of Asia while European investment in the United States is eight times higher than our investment in India and China together.”
Last but not least, the President expressed his disappointment about the inability of UN members to help Syria commenting that the appalling situation in the country “is there to remind us all of the harsh consequences of disagreement amongst the members of the UN Security Council.”
