Google's service deleted the video attacking Brazilian candidate
Google's service has decided to delete the video about a Brazilian mayoral candidate after the government arrested Fabio José Silva Coelho, company’s chief in the Latin American country on 26 September.
The decision was announced by Coelho in a blog post where he expressed his disagreement with the situation and explained the basic principles of YouTube. “Our goal is for YouTube to be a community that everyone can enjoy, as well as a platform for free speech around the world”, he wrote, adding that “this can cause real challenges, because what is OK in one country may be offensive or even illegal in another.”
The service has community guidelines and removes content that can be offensive, but always after “a valid court order or government complain.” In Brazil's case they received lots of removal petitions, but not all of them were valid.
YouTube is “deeply disappointed” that it will not be able to argue its case, Coelho continued, as it believes the videos included in the appeal were examples of “legitimate free speech” that should remain available to all users.
Google will continue to campaign for free expression, because it gives opportunities and freedom to citizens. He finished the letter explaining that the user who published the video has now removed it and closed the account, “showing just what a chilling effect these episodes can have on free speech.”
